- DESCRIPTION: These old betel nut boxes from Java, Indonesia make unique home decor accessories. Once used for utilitarian purposes, these village artifacts have a natural warm patina and organic wear. The custom of chewing betel nut leaf and areca nut was a common practice throughout Indonesia, and much of Southeast Asia, dating back thousands of years and these boxes were originally used to store and serve betel-nuts, tobacco, spices and leaves. Offering a guest to share in a betel nut chew was a form of hospitality and welcome. These hand hewn wooden boxes have open compartments to separate the various ingredients and display a simple utilitarian beauty.
