  • DESCRIPTION: This old betel nut box from Java, Indonesia makes a unique home decor accessory. Once used for utilitarian purposes, this village artifact has hand carved edging detail and a curved skirted base with feet. Wonderful character  from organic wear and a weathered rustic patina add to it’s individual charm.  The custom of chewing betel nut leaf and areca nut was a common practice throughout Indonesia, and much of Southeast Asia, dating back thousands of years and these boxes were originally used to store and serve betel-nuts, tobacco, spices and leaves. Offering a guest to share in a betel nut chew was a form of hospitality and welcome. This hand hewn teak betel-nut tray has open compartments to separate the various ingredients and displays a simple utilitarian beauty. They make unique jewelry holders, spice boxes and holders for any keepsakes. Organic patina – Condition consistent with age and use.
