- DESCRIPTION: Vintage handwoven backstrap loomed textile from East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia collected in the mid 1990’s. This unique “selendang” sash textile, known as “halenda pahikung hemba wuti kau,” combines warp ikat and supplementary warp ikat weaving techniques (pahikung). The warp ikat method is visible in the center panel starting with the top geometric motif. The pahikung weaving process and the embroidered nassa shell/ bead sections are interspersed throughout all three sections of the textile. Pahikung is a weaving technique employing thick, light supplementary warp threads that decorate this textile with the geometric designs. The supplementary warp threads are stained to obtain a variety of color. Other sections of this textile have animal figures embroidered with nassa shells and ceramic beads, creating a handsome piece of cloth rich in style, substance and technique. Condition: Like new, mint.*Pictures of products shown may vary slightly from their original color due to monitor display settings or photography lighting.*
