- DESCRIPTION: This vintage tribal container from the Toba Batak region of North Sumatra is a wonderful representation of ethnic utilitarian art. Handcrafted in the Lake Toba region decades ago, to store herbal medicine and other mixtures for a traditional healer. The body of the container has a flat base and wrapped with rope in a decorative pattern throughout it’s body. A stately figure, carved from a solid piece of wood. was fashioned as a special closure, befitting this container and it’s precious ingredients. The hand carved stopper is a handsome depiction of a rider straddling a mythical “singha” or horse-like figure, valiantly protecting the contents inside. The rider’s headdress even incorporates original horsehair. This tribal Batak container is a unique artifact that will be a special addition to your home décor. Organic character – vintage patina – wood – horse hair.
