- DESCRIPTION: This unusual find is an old village rice chest from Java traditionally known as a “lesung.” It’s a handsome primitive artifact that would make an absolutely cool bench or a unique piece for the entryway or hall. This piece was originally used in the villages to husk rice using large wooden pestles and at other times as a chest to store it. Hand crafted by village artisans from 1 solid piece of teak wood, this primitive rice chest was carved out to create the inside storage space. The top closure is secured by a wooden peg which is easily removed to slide the plank and access the inside. Hand hewn character and texture with a handsome patina from use and age. This utilitarian artifact is a unique piece for a modern style home or to mix with any tribal or ethnic decor. Organic character / original patina throughout.
